The Queen, the Pope, and the Rich Man's Bible

There is an article about the Queen in this week's Time magazine. What amazes me is that most of Europe has not done away with the stupid system of royalty. Why should we keep a class of people that have extorted the masses and compelled us to do their will for a good part of our history? Royals basically just win the genetic lottery: the accident of their birth is the sole reason for their priviliged status in our society. While I'm sure that royalty do, on occasion, add something of use to our society, why are they so suited towards it?

It's funny how such a socialistic group of countries managed to keep their interbred monarchies intact. Even in our own country. We are still technically (I believe) part of the Commonwealth. This means that technically the Queen has power here. In a country run by the people who were originally socialists.

The Pope has also commented on the state of our society. He has condemned the modern lifestyle as decadent and too concerned with money (coming from the man who stands at the head of the richest institution on the face of God's green Earth). But we all know better, don't we?

Pope and The Emperor

I saw a rich man's Bible at the bookstore the other day. Why is it a rich man's Bible? Well, it is leatherbound (in a nice black/light brown color swatch), the page edges are gilded, nogal, and everything Jesus said is printed in red. No kidding. Even when Jesus makes a comeback in Revelations, so does the red. Now what does that tell us? It tells us that the rich man is secure in the knowledge that even when Jesus appears to him floating, with fire for eyes and a sword stuck down his throat, and generally looking kinda creepy like that, he can at least still speak in red like before.
